There’s something I really enjoy about a good photo walk. You don’t necessarily have a plan. You grab a camera, meet up with some other photographers, wander around, and see what catches your eye.
That’s exactly what I did recently when I joined a photo walk through the Las Vegas Arts District, sponsored by B&C Camera and Fujifilm.
For this particular Photography Side Quest, I brought along the Fujifilm X-Half, a tiny half-frame-inspired digital camera that I had been wanting to spend some real time with.
Exploring the Arts District
The Las Vegas Arts District is one of my favorite places to wander around with a camera. There are murals everywhere, interesting storefronts, artwork, old buildings, and—of course—plenty of people.
The X-Half turned out to be a really fun camera for this kind of photography.
I spent most of the walk experimenting with its different film simulations, effects, filters, and presets. Rather than worrying too much about getting technically perfect photographs, I was more interested in seeing what kind of images I could create by playing around with the camera.
And that’s really where the X-Half started to make sense to me.
It’s small enough that you barely notice you’re carrying it. It feels more like a camera you can take everywhere rather than something you need to prepare for. There’s something liberating about that.
Talking Photography with Adam from B&C Camera
One of the highlights of the evening was getting to spend some time talking with Adam from B&C Camera.
I asked him a few questions about his own photography journey—how he got into photography, his experiences with cameras, and what keeps him interested in photography.
I always enjoy hearing how other photographers got started. Everyone seems to have a different path into photography, and those stories are often just as interesting as the photographs themselves.
It’s also one of the things I really like about photo walks. You don’t just get to take pictures; you get to meet people who are just as excited about photography as you are.
Sunset, Clouds and Aguas Frescas
As the evening went on, the light got better and better.
We had a beautiful sunset, followed by some really dramatic clouds as the evening started to turn into night. It was one of those situations where you keep finding yourself saying, “Okay, just one more photo.”
Eventually, we made our way down Main Street and stopped for aguas frescas.
We met Nancy, who was incredibly friendly and served us some really good drinks. It ended up being one of those unexpected little moments that makes a photo walk memorable.
Photography has a funny way of leading you to places and people you probably wouldn’t have encountered otherwise.
So, What Do I Think of the Fujifilm X-Half?
After spending an evening shooting with the X-Half, I’m pretty impressed.
It’s definitely not perfect.
I found the autofocus to be a little slow at times, and there were moments when the camera seemed to meter incorrectly. Some of that could simply be me being unfamiliar with the camera and still learning how its settings work.
But honestly, those things didn’t really take away from the experience.
The X-Half is fun.
It’s tiny. It’s portable. It’s easy to carry around. And it encourages you to experiment.
Fujifilm is clearly trying to capture some of the feeling of shooting film with this camera. I don’t think it completely replicates the film experience—and I’m not sure a digital camera ever really can—but it gets close enough to make the process feel different from shooting with a typical digital camera.
And sometimes that’s all you really need.
A camera that makes you want to go outside and take pictures.
Another Photography Side Quest
By the end of the evening, we headed back to the meetup location and spent some time talking with the other photographers about cameras, photographs, and the experience we’d just had.
It was a great evening of photography, experimentation, good conversation, and exploring Downtown Las Vegas.
And that’s really what these Photography Side Quests are about.
I’m not necessarily trying to create the perfect photograph or conduct a scientific camera review. I’m just trying different cameras, different techniques, and different ways of seeing the world—and having fun while I’m doing it.
This time, the Fujifilm X-Half came along for the ride.
